Back to Rose Street area . New Town Stockbridge area Stockbridge ('Stockaree' to many locals, though perhaps not to the new trendy set) is one of Edinburgh's villages in the city. Part of the New Town at one end, and more turn of the century at the other, its centre clusters round the bridge across the Water of Leith. The 60's and 70's saw St Stephen Street become the centre
of hippy culture and that new age flavour remains in many
of the shops and bars. Trendy, yet workaday, lively yet
sedate quiet areas by the river. The prestigious Edinburgh
Academy shares the area with bars, nightclubs, swimming
baths and a pawn shop. Dean Street, like Rose Street, was a red light area decades ago but is now quaint and sedate. Edinburgh's most famous brothel used to reside in the Georgian grandeur of Danube Street. Just up the road is the treasure that is Ann Street - a step back to the time yet a living, if somewhat exclusive street. Pubs in the area reflect the mix of residents. Council housing, traditional tenements, fashionable high ceilinged flats and Georgian town houses sit side by side. Pubs vary from the historic to the new, the traditional to the trendy - and most have a local feel to them. The Antiquary Aubreys Bar The Bailie Bert's Bar Hamiltons Of Stockbridge Macandrews Raeburn
