Back to: East End . Abbeyhill Easter Road Meadowbank, Portobello This wide area takes in Meadowbank Stadium, home of two Commonwealth Games and extends out to the Victorian seaside resort of Portobello. Portobello is Edinburgh's seaside. It started as one cottage in 1742, and grew as a separate town until 1896 when it became part of Edinburgh. Probably its most famous son was Sir Harry Lauder. The beach is soft and sandy with lots of entertainment on the prom. However for many years it was allowed to decline and is just now emerging again. Still some problems with water pollution at some stretches of the beach. Inland from the beach are some classic squares and stunning architecture, particularly the police station which used to be the town hall.
