Marchmont, Bruntsfield, Morningside,

Marchmont lies to the south of the Meadows and is mainly wide streets of well-to-do tenements renowned for whopping great big rooms, high ceilings and now astronomical prices. Lots of student flats. Not many pubs.

Bruntsfield lies to the west and links Tollcross with Morningside. It even has its own website at www.bruntsfield.co.uk. Mainly residential but with a thriving shopping street with deli's, and up-market shops. Home of Bruntsfield Links, a small ancient golf course.

Morningside, the home of Maisie the cat, is Edinburgh's archetypal 'posh' area famed for Morningside Ladies in fur coats and allegedly 'nae knickers'. The accent is often mocked (a creche is a Morningside road ehccident, sex are for keeping rubbish in etc etc). In reality there is money here but also a mix of residents and a thriving community.

Bennets Ltd

At first site an odd place for a pub, round a corner in Morningside at the foot of a typical tenement. Pre-war design, cosy local bar owned we think by the same folk that used to have Bennets at the Kings and that is reflected in real ales and good whisky selection.

Golf Tavern

Ah now, the Golf. The theme comes from Bruntsfield Links opposite and dates back over 200 years. Until relatively more recently people were bashing balls with sticks on the Links in an ancient variation of the game and you can still pitch and putt here. The Bruntsfield Golf Club is of course now three or four miles away. Pillars divide a relatively big pub with lots of attractive original features.
