Musselburgh
Closer the centre of Edinburgh than some parts of Edinburgh,
Musselburgh is the home of a surprising number of pubs given its size,
although technically some are in Fisherrow.
The 'Honest Toun' gains its name not from accurate whisky
measures (although we're sure that's true too) but from taking care of
an injured Regent and asking for nothing in return.
A host of history is to be found around this attractive
town, though sadly the mussels have long since been polluted like in so
many other places. The old tradition of the Honest Lad and Honest Lass
riding the boundaries still takes place each year. It is also the home
a racecourse.

Volunteer Arms - 'Staggs'
Musselburgh EH21
'Staggs' is a previous winner of CAMRA's National Pub of the Year.
Established in 1858 and held by the same family since, Staggs has a good
reputation and locals (one I know who used to travel from Easter Road)
are fiercely proud of the place. A traditional and aptly decorated pub
with wood panelling and an impressive gantry. No-nonsense place where
chat reigns instead of music. Two or three real ale taps rotate quality
beers with regulars looking forward to forthcoming attractions. Doesn't
serve food but we're told of curry nights for big sporting events. East
Lothian councillors known to drink there but don't let that put you off.

Queensferry
Politically part of Edinburgh if not geographically, the
ancient harbour town lies under the magnificent Forth Bridge and Forth
Road Bridge. Until the early '60s it had been the home of the ferry to
North Queensferry about a mile across the Forth for 800 years. The town
gets its name from Queen Margaret, wife of King Malcolm III (Canmore)
in the 11th century who had to use the ferry to travel from the then capital
of Dunfermline to Edinburgh. Margaret did many good deeds and is depicted
in the town's coat of arms.
The quaint main street on the waterfront has been revitalised
recently and behind it up the hill sprawls a number of housing estates.
