The East of EdinburghEast EndStarting from the East End of Princes Street, down Leith Street to the 'Top of the Walk', this area also takes in Broughton Street, York Place and the edges of the New Town. Much has changed in this area since Picardy Place was named after the dwellings of Huguenot lace makers. The 60's saw the demolition of a hub of shops and houses at the top of Leith walk to make way for a roundabout! Worse still was to follow as the hideous St James Centre shopping mall and government buildings bulldozed away the east extremity of the New Town and dwarfed St Mary's Cathedral. Some amends now made with 'talking point' pigeon sculptures in a broadened piazza in front of the cathedral. Pubs in this area vary from the old traditional hostelries to new and lively nightspots.
