A busy area popular for its turn of the century tenements within walking distance of Princes Street and the grandeur of the Regent Road area. Also famous for the rows of two story 'colony' houses where the upstairs and downstairs access from different streets. Lots of local pubs and one football stadium, home of Hibernian FC.

Seems to never change with a good regular local custom. Used to be that one side of the island bar were local Hibs supporters and the other side Hearts with only minor animosity. Great fun had one night when a Green Party activist sporting an oak leaf rosette was asked by an old punter "what branch are you in?". Also famous for one guy complaining "the wife thinks ah'm oot drinking and playin' dominoes. How can ah tell her ah wiz discussin' Shelley!".
